Dr. Robert A. Sprague is CTO of Gyricon Media Inc., He has been at Xerox PARC since 1976 working in a variety of technical and management positions. Prior to joining Gyricon Media, Dr. Sprague was Xerox's Manager of the Document Hardware Laboratory -- responsible for activities in advanced ink jet printing, integrated direct marking systems research, and SmartPaperTM. He also held the title of Associate Research Center Manager and played a broad role in the management of PARC over the years, including responsibility for technical interaction with the Xerox Business Divisions, research and technology assessment, and administration.
During his career at PARC, Dr. Sprague managed a wide variety of technical areas covering the fields of ink jet printing, flat panel display, document scanning, laser printing, ionography, and optical data storage. He has won numerous Xerox awards including the prestigious "President's Award" for his work in ink jet printing. Dr. Sprague holds over 50 patents and has been recognized as having the most lifetime patents in the history of PARC. Before joining PARC, Dr. Sprague worked at the Itek Corporation in the fields of optical computing and industrial inspection.
Dr. Sprague is internationally known for his work as President of SPIE, and received the SPIE "President's Award" in 1993. He has been extensively involved in organization of technical meetings in the field of optics, data storage, and electronic imaging. He also participated on the national committee investigating solutions to problems with the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Sprague is a Fellow of SPIE, a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), and is on the U.S. National Committee of the ICO (International Commission for Optics), and has over two dozen technical publications. He is a co-holder of the Kingslake medal of SPIE for his work in Document Scanners. Dr. Sprague has a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester.
