Gyricon builds plant to produce electronic paper

Ann Arbor, Mich. - A factory for producing electronic paper was opened here by Gyricon Media Inc. It will be dedicated to products for commercial signs, which analysts have predicted will be the first major application for the new technology.

While the technology could produce a revolution in computer interface design and electronic books, it hasn't yet moved into such mainstream applications. Large display signs in stores that use the technology give an immediate cost/benefit advantage over paper, allowing managers to update prices instantly while reducing the cost of paper and printing.

The signs can link into computer networks so messages can be updated at a moment's notice within stores or even from one store to another.
